About Us In the International Community
Hythe
Rotary
on the
Waterside
Hythe
Rotary’s primary commitment is to improve the life of people on the
Waterside; in particular those in greatest need.
There
are several events that the Club has organized for many years. Two Band
Concerts are held on the Waterside each year. In the Spring the Waterside
Area Youth Bands & Orchestras play and at Christmas the Hampshire
Police Band kick off the festive season.
The
Spring concert is part of the Club’s support of Youth Activities but also,
by our providing transport, our senior citizens are able to enjoy an
afternoon listening to music and renewing friendships.
The
Christmas concert attracts an audience of about 300 and the transport to
the event from the various rest homes presents the Club with a tricky
logistic problem.
Each
year, Rotary in Britain
and Ireland
arranges for individual clubs to take children with challenges to sites of
entertainment. The local clubs go to Paulton’s Park in June. We are
privileged to have a close relationship with Oak Lodge
School and we take as
many children and helpers as possible to this event.
The
Club takes an increasing interest in the problems and opportunities of the
younger members of the community. This has been made more possible by our
representation on the Waterside Youth Steering Group. We have agreed this
year to support with funding and practical help the ‘Sports and Fun in the
Parks’ event which is held during the school summer holidays by the Handy
Trust.
The Club responds to cases of individual need with financial
and practical help.
An
opportunity arose earlier in the year to give practical help to the Hythe
& Dibden Youth Football team by replacing their vandalised football posts
and nets.
An
invaluable service is provided to the residents of the Waterside by the
Community Minibus scheme; the Club makes good use of the vehicles to
transport people to and from the Band Concerts. There is a pressing need to
acquire a replacement vehicle to revitalise the ailing fleet. Our offer of
£4,000 will be the largest donation made by the Club for many years.
We
have also recently been able to support the Beaulieu 10K Run, organized by
Cancer UK,
by acting as marshals; we will help again at the next event in September.
We have been able to provide support for the recently
established Good Neighbour Scheme which will provide volunteer help to
those in need. Several local individuals in need have been given financial
and practical help.
